Since floor tiles tend
to be thicker than wall tiles a special floor tile cutter with angled
jaws or a floor tile cutting tool will be needed.
There are a number of reasons why people
love ceramic tile. Although they are usually cool to the touch, they are
also very durable and naturally resist stains, spills, and water. Tile
is available in a wide selection of styles and colors, with most tiles
being produced using natural clay which is covered with a glaze on one
side. There are many different finishes available for ceramic floor
tiles including glazed (the most popular), matte, or unglazed. A sealant
must be applied to those tiles that are unglazed after they are laid.
Some of the strongest floor tiles come in large sizes and are thicker.
The particles of these tiles have been fused together through high
firing temperatures, a process called vitrifying. These tiles are so
strong they are almost indestructible.
Cutting Ceramic Floor Tiles
When purchasing ceramic tiles it makes sense to always purchase a few
extra. This gives you some insurance in case tiles crack or break while
they are being cut to fit in a certain location, or if they get damaged
down the line. Laying floor tiles is very similar to the process used
for laying wall tiles. Since floor tiles tend to be thicker than wall
tiles a special floor tile cutter with angled jaws or a floor tile
cutting tool will be needed. The length of the tiles can be marked with
a wood stick. This stick can also serve as your tile gauge. When
determining length remember that you need to leave consistent spacing
for grout.
Laying Ceramic Floor Tiles
Your floor tile adhesive should be waterproof and allow for some
flexibility after it has completely set. Place a thin layer of adhesive
to the back of your tile and then firmly press it into place. Since the
placement of the first tile will determine the placement of all the
other tiles it is essential that it be done right. You can nail a batten
to the floor to serve as a straight edge and aid in the proper
positioning of your tiles. To have consistent grout lines you can either
use plastic spacers or thick card to give you an even distance between
tiles. You will achieve the best looking results if your grout lines are
evenly spaced.
Cleaning Ceramic Floor Tiles
Since ceramic tiles come pre-glazed they will not require polish. Since
some vacuums can scratch the surface of your tiles it is always best to
sweep them.
