When it comes time to
cut holes, angles, and straight edges in most types of ceramic tile you
need to help from the versatile ceramic tile cutter.
These tile cutters are operated by hand
and work by creating a weak point in the tile by scoring its hard glaze
with a sharp tungsten carbide wheel, and then breaking the tile along
that line.
How to use Ceramic Tile Cutters
Prior to beginning your project it is a good idea to practice using some
tile scraps until you feel comfortable. Glazed ceramic tiles which have
been fired are best cut using straight tile cutters. This type of cutter
will not be effective for stone, fully vitrified porcelain, or unglazed
clay tiles. Cuts on these types of tiles will require a wet saw.
Your first step is to mark the cut line on the tile and align it with
the arrow on the tile cutter. Secure the tile in place with the use of
the guide. You can leave the guide in place if you have multiple tiles
that need the same cut.
Next you will want place the scoring wheel on the outmost edge of the
tile while holding the handle firmly. Score the tile by pushing down and
then drawing the handle toward you. Make sure that you score the entire
length of the tile. You will notice a scratch stretching from one end of
the tile to the next.
Press down on the handle after pulling it to the top edge of the tile.
The tile should break cleanly around your scored line.
Other useful tips for Ceramic Tile Cutters
It is important to make sure the tile cutter receives regular
maintenance, including oiling the guide bar and scoring wheel and
replacing the scoring wheel when it gets worn. You need a sharp scoring
wheel to make clean cuts. You will get straight and square cuts using a
ceramic tile cutter. Tiles are first scored and the broken as you apply
pressure to the handle with your hand. It is easy to snap the tile along
the line using a tile cutter. You will find tile cutters available for
rent at almost all hardware stores, flooring stores, and home centers.
