You can place tile over just about any surface if the correct adhesive is used.

This includes new surfaces such as cement render, plaster, fiber cement sheets, plasterboard, and old surfaces such as wood, metal, and even old tiles. Your first step should be to remove any loose or flaking paint, and all water based paint. As paint stripper can continue to act as a releasing agent it should not be used to remove the paint. Oil based paint does not need to be removed, but it should be roughened. Clean the surface and allow it to dry completely. Never tile over wallpaper, or any other surface that may separate from the base. Your base surface will determine the quality of your finished job.

Tiling Walls
Almost no home has perfectly vertical walls. You will need to use your plumb bob to make sure you have vertical lines to follow when installing your tiles. Carefully plan the layout of your tile so you are not installing full tiles on the bottom and only a thin strip of tile along the top. Your cuts should be toward the back when tiling around windows. You will also want to keep the returned tiles in line with the rest of the tiles. You can hide external corners with the use of tiling rim moldings. These moldings are usually made from either metal or PVC and come in a wide selection of colors. Cutting tile is usually the part of the job that makes people most uncomfortable, although it really is very simple. First mark the tile with a line where it needs to be cut. Then scribe the top of the tile with the scriber and use the tool to break it in half.

Conclusion
When you only need to remove a small amount of material from the tile your best bet is to score the tile and use a nipper to remove small pieces at a time. Always remember not to take off too much at one time, as you could end up removing more than you planned. There are various methods out there for removing material from the center of a tile, all of which work with various levels of efficiency. One of the best ways to do this is to drill a hole with a masonry bit and then use a carbide rod saw blade as you would a fret saw. You can also use an angle grinder with either a diamond or carbide wheel. Nippers tend to leave jagged edges so you will want to clean them up with a stone or file.
