Ceramic tiles are usually produced to be very durable; however it is possible to have minor problems that need to be repaired.

You don’t have to worry about replacing your entire floor, as it is quite possible to repair or replace one tile or one section of tile. Use the following tips to make your tile floor look good as new. These tips are great for vinyl sheet floors, vinyl tiles, and linoleum.

Almost all tile floors have some problems after years of use. You will need some common tools in order to repair your floor. Some of the items that are needed include aluminum foil, mineral spirits, clothing iron, putty knife, flooring adhesive, scrap wood, and 2 buckets.

Repairing a Curled Tile

  1. Pull up the damaged corner of tile and cover it with aluminum foil to protect it. Set your iron on medium heat and apply it to the area protected with foil. Keep the iron on the tile until the material becomes soft and pliable. Lift up the tile corner that is curled and scrape off the old adhesive from both the tile and the floor.
  2. Apply new adhesive to the bottom of the exposed piece of tile and press it back into the floor. Wipe off any excess adhesive with mineral spirits.
  3. Fill your two buckets with water and place them on top of the tile to weigh it down until the adhesive has an opportunity to set. To help distribute the weight more evenly across the tile place the pieces of scrap wood across the tile and then place the buckets on top of the scrap wood.

Replacing a Damaged Tile

  1. Cover the damaged tile with aluminum foil and place a warm iron on top of the foil. Keep the iron in place until the tile is soft and flexible. Use a utility knife to score the center of the tile and a putty knife to pry the tile up from the center outward.
  2. Apply mineral spirits to the area under the tile to remove any old adhesive from the floor. You can use a putty knife to scrape the material away.
  3. Cover a new tile with aluminum foil and warm it with the iron until it is soft. Use a notched trowel to apply adhesive to the floor and then set the tile in place. Firmly set the tile into the adhesive and wipe away any excess adhesive using mineral spirits. Weight down the tile using the two buckets filled with water. Place them on top of the wood scraps the more evenly distribute their weight.
