There are several tools that are needed to efficiently repair or replace ceramic tile.

These tools include a tile cutter, nipper, and a notched trowel.

Tile Cutter
When repairing or replacing damaged tiles this is the most important tool you can have. They are easy to use, allowing you to score the tile and then break it along the line you have created. You may need to score the tile many times if it is very thick. The guide bar and scoring wheel should always be oiled prior to using a tile cutter. You will also want to replace the scoring wheel as soon as it becomes worn so that you always have nice clean cuts.

Tile Nipper
This tool is needed to make cuts which are irregular. The cut line first needs to be scored using a glasscutter or utility knife, then the nipper removes small pieces of tile along that line. You need to use lots of patience when using a nipper, as moving too fast may cause you to remove more material than you would like. This would mean not only ruining the tile but needing to start all over again. This tool is best used for tiles that will be in hidden areas or covered by trim pieces as they leave a jagged edge. Always wear eye protection when using a tile nipper as pieces often fly all over the place.

Notched Trowel
This tool is very vital as well. This tool is needed in order to properly spread the adhesive onto the under layment. This trowel will have either V or square shaped grooves along the side. Tiles set on horizontal surfaces call for a square notched trowel. A V notched trowel should be used for vertical surfaces. You will find these trowels in a variety of notch depths. You should use the trowel with notches that are two-thirds of your tiles thickness. You can also use this trowel for spreading grout and other forms of adhesive.
